Sunriver

We spent Labor Day Weekend over in Sunriver thanks to some good friends of ours having their wedding there. It had been a little over 7 years since we'd been, and I had forgotten how much there is to do. We had an amazing time. The first night there we took the kids to the observatory. The volunteers told us all about the constellations and we looked at supernovas and Jupiter with four moons through telescopes. Thanks to two of our group being 15 year old girls, we had babysitters available and we actually got to go out with everyone 2 nights in a row as adults! We rented a huge house with 5 families and about 20 people total (our same camping group, minus the bride and groom). It was an awesome house with a juke box, hot tub, and a game room filled with movies and stand up arcade games. The kids were happy enough to never leave with all that available plus friends to play with right there - but we did manage to make it over to the big pool with the slide a couple times. The wedding was beautiful, the kids had a great time, and I had too many cosmopolitans.I had scheduled a cave tour before we left with Wanderlust Tours. They picked us up right in Sunriver and took us to Skeleton Cave. We got to put on miner's hats and head down into the lava tube. I took out my camera to get what would have been some AWESOME pictures, but discovered my batteries were too low for pics. Grrr!!! The above image of the entrance to the cave I stole off the internet. Ronny and I went caving with some friends in Bend when we first met, so I knew what I was getting into - and I knew I probably wouldn't like it - but I wanted the kids to experience it. The kids were major troopers - there were some difficult areas to navigate further down in the cave, even for adults. Elie especially - such an adventuress! For a moment, we were worried she wasn't going to make it much further and the guide said he didn't want us moving in the cave without him so I was facing sitting in total darkness (except our helmets) with Elie until they came back.... not something I would have enjoyed in any way. Thank Goodness that was about the time Elie got brave and kicked it into high gear. Anyway - it was an amazing trip and awesome to be able to expose the kids to that. I was seriously upset that I wasn't able to take pics. Back up in the sunlight, we decided to take a bike ride out to the Sunriver stables and let the kids have a pony ride. Elie was so excited, she leaned over to me before we left and asked, "Mom, do you think they'll have any that are pink?" By the time we got back from the stables we had biked a good 6-7 miles - after the cave hike in the morning. The kids were troopers again, but by the time we reached the house both Elie and Tyler had pooped out on the bikes and squeezed themselves and their bikes into our bike trailer to ride the rest of the way back.
Our house was right next to the mall, so we finished up our last night by walking over to Goody's Sweet Shop for ice cream and enjoyed the free outdoor concert. It was a wonderful weekend and an excellent way to end the summer.
